Aleksandra Szewczuk (born in 1982 in Gdynia, based in Sopot, Poland), is a contemporary painter best known for her psychological and abstract works on raw canvas. Using acrylic paints on untreated canvas, Szewczuk’s vibrant and matt compositions consist of open washes of color on a noble surface and are marked by a spatial interplay of background and foreground via grainy edges and shifting virtuously from opaque to transparent.
The Polish artist lets the paint penetrate the fabric in an almost meditative, creative act to achieve a profound and internal connection with the painting and the viewer as the external. By doing so, the artist is able to anchor herself in the present, surrendering herself to the contemplative process.
Szewczuk studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk, Poland. Notable national and international exhibitions include the National Painting Competition in honor of Leon Wyczólkowski in Bydgoszcz, Poland; the XIII Triennial of Small Painting Forms in Torun, Poland; the III Pomeranian Art Triennial in Sopot, Poland; the State Gallery of Art in Sopot, Poland; the National Exhibition Center in Quebec, Canada; and the Art Center El Gallery in Elblag, Poland. As a result, Szewczuk is featured in the public collection of the National Gallery of Art in Sopot, Poland; one of the biggest post-war private collections in London, the United Kingdom; and various other private collections in Warsaw, Krakow, Sopot, Poznan, New York, Sydney, Montreal, Düsseldorf, Stockholm, Rome, Lisbon, the Dominican Republic, and London.
